Mary Mallory / Hollywood Heights – Studio City’s La Fonda Wayside Inn

La Fonda

The bread-and-butter businesses of most municipalities are those providing goods and services, with restaurants near the top of the list. Running a restaurant is extremely difficult, because costs are high, profit margins are low and public tastes can often be fickle. Staying open is sometimes a losing proposition.

North Hollywood possessed few restaurants in the 1910s and 1920s because it was a rural, farming community. When the Mack Sennett Studios began construction in 1927 and real estate transactions soared in the area, many eating establishments opened.

Black Dahlia: Waiting for Test Results on Dr. George ‘Evil Genius’ Hodel’s Murder HQ, Week 2

Ever wonder how long it takes to test soil samples for evidence of human remains? We are, of course, since we are waiting breathlessly for results of soil taken from Dr. George “Evil Genius” Hodel’s purported Murder HQ after “Buster the Wonder Dog” frolicked around the Sowden House pointing out remains – or something – in November 2012.

There is still no word on what – if anything – was found during taping of SyFy’s “Ghost Hunters” in November in a segment that was aired by KNBC-TV Channel 4 on Feb. 1. (In case you didn’t know, February is a “sweeps month,” when stations go into hyperdrive (emphasis on hype) to boost their ratings.)

But we do know this.

CNN reported Oct. 2, 2012, that tests results were expected “today” on samples taken “last week” in hopes of finding the remains of former Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa.

Providing more details,  the C&G News reported Oct.5, 2012, that soil samples were collected Sept. 28, 2012, transported Oct. 1, to Michigan State University for testing  and that no trace of human remains were found. In other words, it’s a fairly speedy process…

According to a Feb. 3, 2013, Daily Beast article, results were expected “next week.”  Gosh, I wonder what the holdup is.

You don’t suppose they didn’t find anything, do you?  That it was all sweeps month hype?

No Carole Lombard Death Scene Photos Here!

image

One of the oddest experiences in running the L.A. Daily Mirror is to see how many people stumble in while searching for “snuff” pictures of Carole Lombard, who died in a 1942 plane crash. Not a day goes by that I don’t get searches for “carole lombard death photos” or something similar.  I have never seen any of these pictures, I don’t know if they exist and if they do, I absolutely would NOT run them. People who surf the Net looking for morgue pictures or body shots — whether it’s Lombard or Elizabeth Short or anybody else — should get a life.

Mary Mallory / Hollywood Heights: Douglas Fairbanks, Author

Fairbanks-Making Life Worthwhile
Douglas Fairbanks: “Teaching his dog to smile.”

Douglas Fairbanks exploded onto the filmmaking scene in 1915 after a successful career on Broadway as a dashing leading man. His jaunty joie de vivre and flashy acrobatics wowed audiences on stage and soon enthralled filmgoers as well. By 1917, the successful Fairbanks opened his own production company called the Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corp. The handsome star represented the best qualities of America – drive, confidence and goodness.

“I wish I hadn’t done that!!!!!”

March 1, 1950: Another day of tedium at the purported murder HQ of Dr. George “Evil Genius” Hodel.

In case you just tuned in and are wondering “What’s with all this boring nonsense?”

I’m fed up with people cherry-picking phrases out of these transcripts in an attempt to show that they implicate Dr. George Hodel in a deadly rampage in which he committed virtually every unsolved murder in Los Angeles for decades, so I am posting them in their entirety. Decide for yourself what sort of man Dr. George Hodel was, based on his own words.

Black Dahlia: Hodel ‘Murder HQ’ Test Results? Day 5

It’s Friday and still no announcement. And here I was, thinking that the Black Dahlia case was “nearly solved.”  You don’t suppose it was all just a publicity stunt, do you?

If you will remember (and of course you do) Christine Pelisek wrote in the Daily Beast on Feb. 3, 2013, that test results on soil taken from the Sowden House (George “Evil Genius” Hodel’s purported murder HQ) would be “expected next week.”

Buster the “Wonder Dog” supposedly located “the scent of death” in several places at the home and soil from these places was to be tested.

We’re waiting….

San Xavier: The Mystery of the Mission’s Missing Lions

IMG_20130214_104851

In 1982, two hand-carved wooden lions dating from 1797 vanished from the chancel at Mission San Xavier del Bac. In 1988, the reproductions shown above made by brothers Hector and Jorge Ortega were installed and fastened down to prevent theft. I never knew what happened to the originals until I visited today and heard two guides tell tour groups that a mentally challenged janitor wrote to a priest at the mission 16 years later and asked for forgiveness because he had taken them out back to an incinerator and burned them.
