Dodgers Champs!

Sept. 30, 1959, Cover

Sept. 30, 1959: The Dodgers are the lead story over the explosion of an airliner. Of course, this isn't the home delivery edition, which probably had a different layout.

Sept. 30, 1959, Knitting
The Dodgers swept their playoff series with the Braves, becoming an
unlikely World Series participant that found an unlikely way to win the
deciding game.

Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Dodgers
rallied to tie it and then won the game in the 12th, 6-5. A former
Brooklyn Dodger hero, Carl Furillo, pinch-hit in the ninth and his
sacrifice fly scored Gil Hodges to tie it. In the 12th, Furillo's
chopper over the mound was fielded by shortstop Felix Mantilla but his
throw skipped past first baseman Frank Torre, scoring Hodges from
second.

Never before had a National League team jumped from seventh place to
the pennant in one season. The Dodgers headed to Chicago for Game 1 of
the Series.

Dodgers Win 3-2; On to Coliseum!

Sept. 28, 1959, Cover

Sept. 29, 1959

It's Dodger Day in Los Angeles. Got your tickets yet?

The Dodgers returned home to the Coliseum after beating Milwaukee,
3-2, in the first game of their playoff series. One more victory and
the Dodgers would be in the World Series against the Chicago White Sox.

Larry Sherry pitched an incredible 7 2/3 innings of relief to keep
the Dodgers in the game and catcher John Roseboro homered in the sixth
to provide the winning margin.

Speaking of tickets, 70,000 seats were going on sale for today's second game. Don Drysdale would face Lew Burdette.

At least one member of the White Sox was rooting for the Dodgers.
"Pop flies are homers in the Coliseum so that's the park for us,"
catcher Sherm Lollar said.

The City Council was behind the Dodger Day business, of course. "Los
Angeles has more baseball fans than any other city and each of our fans
is rooting for the team to stay on top," said Mayor Norris Poulson.

Dodgers, Braves Tie for Pennant

Sept. 28, 1959, Cover

The Dodgers and Braves would meet in a best-of-three playoff series
to determine the National League representative in the World Series.

Both teams won their regular-season finales to stay tied for first.
The Dodgers beat the Cubs, 7-1, and the Braves beat the Phillies, 5-2.
The playoffs would start in Milwaukee.

–Both teams finished with 86 victories, a major league record for the fewest wins for a first-place team.

–Danny McDevitt would start Game 1 for the Dodgers apparently bypassing Sandy Koufax, who earlier had been named the starter.

–The playoff games would be day games, thanks to a protest by the
Braves, according to a story in The Times. No clue what the Braves were
protesting.

–Tickets would be at regular season prices.
