July 31, 1947: The Sentinel’s front page is full of news: Elizabeth Ingalls is sentenced in the San Diego slavery case to a fine of $2,500, three years probation and a $6,000 payment to Dora Jones.
The Sentinel also reports that police haven’t made any progress in investigating the killing of Vesta Belle Sapenter.

Of course, $6000.00 was worth a lot more in 1947 but from here it doesn’t look like Dora got much justice.

If you read the story all the way through you’ll see that the Ingallses were pretty much broke. And that the judge jailed Elizabeth Ingalls because he was afraid her husband was going to do a murder/suicide. It’s a tragic story all the way around.

I read the story all the way through. How long did they keep this woman a slave 40 years? And all the while the statute of limitations was apparently busily erasing their culpability for all but the most recent three years? Am I reading these two articles correctly? $6,000 for a lifetime. The Ingalls’ situation does not mitigate their behavior.
