This week’s mystery movie has been the Twentieth Century-Fox CinemaScope production of “Garden of Evil,” with Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward and Richard Widmark. The 1954 film was written by Frank Fenton, based on a story by Fred Freiberger and William Tunberg. Photographed by Milton Krasner and Jorge Stahl Jr., with music by Bernard Herrmann, produced by Charles Brackett and directed by Henry Hathaway.

Nov. 3, 2014, Mystery Movie

For Monday, we have a mystery gent who is a bit under the weather.

Update: This is poor old Hugh Marlowe, who spends much of the film either in bed or languishing in some way.   I won’t spoil the movie, but it doesn’t end well for him.

And for Tuesday we have a mystery singer and an appreciative mystery audience.

Update: This is Rita Moreno, who appears briefly in the film, admired by Antonio Bribiesca, center, and Victor Manuel Mendoza.

Please congratulate Patrick (mystery movie and guest) and Rick (mystery movie, mystery cast, wrong mystery guest — which I think is a first).

And for Wednesday, we have a mystery gent who is a bit upset, possibly about not getting enough close-ups and always being in two-shots and three-shots.

Update: This is Cameron Mitchell, who – believe it or not — played Happy in the original production of “Death of a Salesman.”

Please congratulate Julie Merholz (mystery movie and cast), Dewey Webb (mystery movie and mystery singer), Patrick (mystery singer and mystery friends), dlhartzog (mystery movie and mystery guests) and Gary Martin (mystery movie and mystery cast).

And for Thursday a (totally not) mystery card sharp.

Update: Richard Widmark is about to find out that he should watch his back.

Please congratulate Gary Martin (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Benito (Wednesday’s mystery gent), dlhartzog (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Patrick (Wednesday’s mystery gent) and Bob Hansen (Tuesday’s mystery cantina singer and Wednesday’s mystery gent).

Gary Martin says: XXX always looked upset about something …that was his “thing”…sometimes “surly”.

And for Friday, we have Tony Randall and Janet Leigh in the mystery film “Hello Down There.” (Seems to me TCM overlooked that little gem even during its tribute to star of the month Janet Leigh.)

Update: OK, this isn’t really Tony Randall and Janet Leigh from “Hello Down There.” I was kidding. It’s actually Don Knotts and Joan Staley in “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.”

Please congratulate Mary Mallory (Thursday’s mystery card sharp), Patrick (Thursday’s mystery card sharp), dlhartzog (Thursday’s mystery card sharp), Dennis Gilliam (mystery movie, mystery cantina singer, mystery card sharp), Benito (mystery movie, mystery cantina singer), LC (mystery movie, mystery cantina singer, mystery surly cowboy and mystery card sharp), William (mystery movie, mystery cantina singer, mystery card sharp), beachgal (mystery card sharp) and Michael Ryerson (mystery movie, mystery cantina singer, mystery surly cowboy and mystery cardsharp).

  27. Owing to the comely cantina dancer (or is it singer) looking suspiciously like Rita Moreno and the agitated galoot resembling Cameron Mitchell, and now we come to Richard Widmark sporting one of his signature not-quite-a-cowboy-hats, I’m gonna take a flyer and say Garden of Evil (1954) with Susan Hayward and Gary Cooper. Just a guess.
