Here’s another mystery photo courtesy of Christopher McPherson. This is from the Waxman studio, a name I don’t recall encountering before. The annoying black box is where our mystery guest inscribed his photo.

Henry Waxman was a major portrait photographer in the 1920s-1930s, starting in New York and then coming to LA to work for MGM and later, Warner Bros. Lillian Gish was a strong supporter of his. Per David Shields’ “Still,” he and his sister moved to LA in 1923, establishing a studio at 5821 Sunset Blvd., and he advertised himself as “official photographer of the Ziegfeld Follies,” whom he had shot in 1922. He focused on portfolio shots for aspiring stars, before focusing on stars, who loved his dramatic flair and retouching. He joined MGM in 1925 after financial problems, shooting stills for “La Boheme” and “Bardelys the Magnificent” for King Vidor. He was a favorite photographer of Esquire magazine in the 1940s (pp. 289-293).
