I chose Three Brave Men by going through the trades and I was intrigued because I didn’t expect Hollywood to produce a film in which a wrongfully accused Communist sympathizer is exonerated. (The film is based on the story of Abraham Chasanow, who was fired by the Navy in 1954 as a security risk although he was cleared by a hearing board.) It’s a good story with a strong cast and many familiar faces from television of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.
Bosley Crowther may have approved of such goings-on. Possibly.
Actually, Bosley does not, though it takes him several paragraphs to get around to saying so (The New York Times, March 16, 1957):
Have patience with the government’s security program and don’t leap to conclusions that a man released from a government job for “security reasons” is necessarily disloyal or a spy. This is the well-intended thesis of Twentieth Century-Fox’s Three Brave Men, a little film starring Ray Milland and Ernest Borgnine that came to the Paramount yesterday.
More than the thesis is well intended. Everything in this film appears to be carefully calculated, with a general public service in mind. But, brother, have its makers confused it with a complex of “guilt” attitudes and a shocking revelation of incompetence and irrelevance in the administration of the program.

I do not recognize the mysterious fellow. But “Back of the Head Guy” is giving off serious Edward G. Robinson vibes, though I suspect it is not.

Tues – Mr Borgnine pulling a “Thomas Mitchell tricky Tuesday” moment. OS, surrounding him in this scene:
Diane Jergens (whose widower, Randy Sparks, I learned from reading about her, died just last month), Virginia Christie (aka ‘Mrs Olsen’ in the Folger’s coffee commercials) and Warren Berlinger (as a kid I loved seeing him in “The Wackiest Ship in the Army”, I think on the Million Dollar Movie show.
