I was poking around for mystery movies that haven’t aired on TCM and came up with Shock, a scary little thriller with Vincent Price.
The AFI Catalogue entry says Bosley Crowther hated it, and that’s no surprise since he disliked almost everything. And here he is (March 9, 1946):
As a usual thing, the melodramas which the Rialto Theatre shows — despite their horrors and morbidities — can be quietly dismissed. But the one called Shock, which opened in that theatre yesterday, should arouse the critical observer to protest in no uncertain tones. It is not that the picture is cheaply sensational, artistically: that is a standard condition which one might overlook. It is rather that, in telling a fraudulent and unhealthy tale, it tends to excite apprehension against the treatment of nervous disorders.
For Monday, we have a mystery fellow. He does not approve of such goings-on.

Dang! Another one of those “talked myself out of it” moments. Mon, looked like a prison, then Tues, decided to go with maybe a mental institution, found lots of movies – kept looking in the 1950s. Bumped into, but couldn’t quite place Lynn Bari, found others like her – also not right…Anyway…
