I picked this week’s mystery movie based on a friend’s recommendation. And it was a fun discovery, even though it’s another vehicle for Edward Arnold. I just may have to put him in Mystery Movie jail with Van Johnson and Mitchell Leisen.

I’m going to guess that Secret of the Blue Room got a good review from Mordaunt Hall. Let’s see….

It’s Mordaunt Hall, all right (Sept. 13, 1933):

Another of Universal’s murder mysteries is now on exhibition at the Rialto. This particular blood-curdler enjoys the title of The Secret of the Blue Room and is a tale calculated to make blue rooms in old Continental castles rather unpopular, especially on dark and stormy nights. Like its predecessor, The Old Dark House, the current film lopes along in quite an interesting fashion until it comes to the denouement, which is by no means as satisfactory as might be anticipated.

Bald man smoking cigar talks on the telephone.
For Monday, we have a mysterious fellow.

Alas, this fellow remains unidentified. A wonderful face. I always hope someone will recognize these unidentified folks.

Pretty woman, short dark hair, in maid's outfit.
For Tuesday, we have a mysterious woman.

Update: This is Muriel Kirkland.

Man in coveralls, leaning over.
For “Hm Wednesday,” we have a mysterious fellow.

Update: This is Russell Hopton.

Woman in dress with lace collar and cuffs. She's upset.
Also this mystery woman.

Update: This is Elizabeth Patterson.

Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and Tuesday’s mystery maid) and Anne Papineau (mystery movie and Tuesday’s mystery maid).

Man sitting in chair. He is wearing a tuxedo.
For “Aha Thursday,” we have this mysterious gentleman in a tuxedo.

Update: This is Onslow Stevens.

Another man sitting in a chair, wearing a tuxedo. He's wearing the tuxedo, not the chair. I mean the chair isn't wearing the tuxedo, the man is. Nor is the man wearing the chair.
We also have this mysterious gentleman. He, too, is wearing a tuxedo.

Update: This is William Janney.

Man in officer's uniform, man in butler's outfit, and a suit of armor. Unoccupied.
And finally, two more gentlemen.  Also a suit of armor, presumably unoccupied.

Update: This is Paul Lukas and Robert Barrat.

Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery guests), Sheila (mystery movie, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests), Mike Hawks (mystery movie, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests), Roget-L.A. (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Anne Papineau (Wednesday’s mystery guests), Blackwing Jenny (mystery movie and Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery women) and Mary Mallory (mystery movie, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests).

A woman clutches the arm of a mystery man. The next fellow has his eyes closed. He is wearing a coat, hat and scarf. Also Back of the Head Guy

For Friday, we have more mystery people and Back of the Head Guy.

Update: This is, from left, Gloria Stuart, Lionel Atwill, Anders Van Haden and Edward Arnold as Back of the Head Guy.

Him again? Also another mystery fellow.
We also have this familiar mystery gent and a mysterious companion.

Update: This is Edward Arnold and James Durkin.

Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (Thursday’s mystery guests), Greg (mystery movie and Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests — and predicting Friday’s mystery guests), Howard Mandelbaum (Thursday’s mystery guests), Sylvia E. (mystery movie and Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests), Mike Hawks (Thursday’s mystery guests), Jenny M. (mystery movie), B.J. Merholz (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery guests), Anne Papineau (Thursday’s mystery guests), L.C. (mystery movie and mystery cast), Dan Nather (mystery movie and Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests) and Megan and Thom (mystery movie and Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests).

Monday we have, I think, James Durkin. Tuesday, the maid is Muriel Kirkland. Wednesday, we have Russell Hopton and Elizabeth Patterson. Thursday, we have Onslow Stevens, William Janney, Paul Lukas, and Robert Barrat. The movie is Secret of the Blue Room from 1933. Still to come should be Lionel Atwill, Gloria Stuart, and Edward Arnold.

“Aha Thursday” strikes again with Mr Lukas my guide into the film and a cast list to follow.

Secret of the Blue Room 1933
Mon – not sure, but I’ll guess James Durkin
    Tues – Muriel Kirkland
Wed – Elizabeth Patterson (with Muriel sitting in the distance) and I’m guessing that’s Russell Hopton in the overalls (chauffeur gear for car repairs?)
Thu – Onslow Stevens, William Janney and Paul Lukas with Robert Barrat, the butler.

It’s nice to have a “spooky old house” film again (even though I had no idea until today who anyone was until today.)

Friday – image 1 – Gloria Stuart, Mr Atwill again (and he has a secret regarding the stranger and Ms Stuart), Anders van Haden (who also has a secret regarding Ms Stuart and Mr Atwill) and BOTHG is Mr Arnold who will detangle everything.

Image 2 – Edward Arnold and James Durkin (who is clearly ‘assisting’ – not like my guess yesterday.)

Hoping that you know who Monday’s ‘cigar smoking-stopwatch-pencil-telephone’ guy is. No one seems to have identified him yet. Looking forward to the Saturday breakdown.
