This week’s mystery movie was the 1933 film “A Study in Scarlet,” with Reginald Owen, Anna May Wong, June Clyde, Allan Dinehart, John Warburton, Alan Mowbray, Warburton Gamble, J.M. Kerrigan, Doris Lloyd, Billy Bevan, Leila Bennett, Wyndham Standing and Halliwell Hobbes.

Screenplay by Robert Florey, continuity and dialogue by Reginald Owen, photography by Arthur Edeson, editing by Rose Loewinger, settings by Ralph DeLacy, sound by Hans Weeren, directed by Edwin L. Marin. A KBS production produced at the California Tiffany Studios, distributed by Fox.

“A Study in Scarlet” is available on DVD from TCM.

Writing in the New York Times (June 1, 1933), Mordaunt Hall said:

Murder will out — if Sherlock Holmes is around. he is now to be seen at the Mayfair in a 1933 form, probably not recognizable to those who have seen the old drawings in London’s Strand Magazine in which his adventures appeared for so many years. But the astuteness and marvelous deductive powers of the Conan Doyle character are nevertheless not dimmed in the film version of “A Study in Scarlet” ….

Mr. [Reginald] Owen gives quite an effective performance as Holmes. he is a good-looking Holmes and he speaks his lines with due reverence. Warburton Gamble is interesting as the latest Dr. Watson, and Alan Mowbray, the villain of more than one picture, fills the part of the much-handicapped Lestrade….

The atmosphere of London thoroughfares, including, of course, Baker Street, is quite well reproduced. And there are also some glimpses in a tap room that may make some sigh with regret that only 3.2 is, so far. here.
