Jan. 2, 1958: Photographer Edward Weston Dies

L.A. Times, 2008
1958_0102_weston Here’s a blog post I wrote for the Daily Mirror blog in 2008, when it was hosted by the Los Angeles Times. Edward Weston, one of the great photographers of the 20th century, received a one-paragraph obituary in the Los Angeles Times.

Someone so important a photographer only received 1 paragraph as an obituary? Was it a busy news day, or did they not think photographers worthy of long praise?

The Times was a very different operation in the 1950s. Financially successful, but not a great paper editorially. It took Otis Chandler to turn The Times into a first-rate newspaper. Raymond Chandler got maybe two paragraphs. Seriously.
