This week’s mystery movie has been the 1944 RKO film “Government Girl,” with Olivia de Havilland, Sonny Tufts, Anne Shirley, Jess Barker, James Dunn, Paul Stewart, Agnes Moorehead, Harry Davenport, Una O’Connor and Sig Ruman. The screenplay was by Dudley Nichols, adapted by Budd Schulberg from a story by Adela Rogers St. John. The photography was by Frank Redman, special effects by Vernon L. Walker, art direction by Albert S. D’Agostino, set decoration by Darrell Silvera and Al Fields, gowns by Edward Stevenson, music by Leigh Harline and musical direction by C. Bakaleinikoff. The associate producer was Edward Donahoe. The film was produced and directed by Dudley Nichols.

The DVD is available from Warner Archive.

Writing in the New York Times (Jan. 7, 1944), Bosley Crowther said:

Dudley Nichols is a first-class screen-writer; at least, he has written some first-class films. But his initial crack at directing has not found him up to that style. His “Government Girl,” which came yesterday to the Palace, via RKO, is a muddled and curiously uneven attempt to make several kinds of sport out of wartime crowded conditions and general government confusion in Washington. In some spots, his film is amusing. In long stretches, it is hopelessly dull. It betrays liberal borrowing from several sources. Mr. Nichols is no director—yet.

Thursday (what little we can see) reminds me of Joan Leslie, but I can’t find a movie that fits, so I’m guessing that’s it’s probably not her.

    Hmmmmm….????
