This week’s mystery movie has been the 1936 RKO film “Two in the Dark,” with Walter Abel, Margo Grahame, Wallace Ford, Gail Patrick, Alan Hale, Leslie Fenton, Eric Blore, Erin O’Brien-Moore, Erik Rhodes, J. Carroll Naish and Addison Randall. It was directed by Ben Stoloff, with a screenplay by Seton I. Miller, based on a novel by Gelett Burgess, art direction by Van Nest Polglase and Al Herman and gowns by Bernard Newman.

The film was photographed by Nick Musuraca, who was my reason for selecting this picture.

It is not commercially available on DVD or VHS, but airs occasionally on TCM.

Writing in the New York Times (Feb. 1, 1936), T.M.P. said:

“Two in the Dark,” which moved into the Palace yesterday, merits the attention of cinemagoers who take an especial interest in mystery stories liberally sprinkled with comedy. Dexterously directed by Ben Stoloff, the film, adapted by Seton I. Miller from Gelett Burgess’s novel, “Two O’clock Courage,” is a consistently entertaining account of an amnesia victim’s attempts to discover his identity and convince himself, not to mention the police, that he is not guilty of murdering a theatrical producer.

Here he is, looking dapper in a three-piece suit. A good example of lighting when you’re shooting in black and white and the actor is wearing a hat with a big brim that shades his face.

Update: Alan Hale.
