This week’s movie has been the 1946 Columbia picture “Johnny O’Clock,” starring Dick Powell and Evelyn Keyes. The movie was directed by Robert Rossen, with Lee J. Cobb, Ellen Drew, Nina Foch, S. Thomas Gomez, John Kellogg, Jim Bannon, Mabel Paige and Phil Brown. The screenplay is by Rossen from a story by Milton Holmes. It was photographed by Burnett Guffey, with art direction by Stephen Goosson and Cary Odell, with set decorations by James Crowe.
It is available in the Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics IV collection from TCM, with “So Dark the Night,” “Walk a Crooked Mile,” “Between Midnight and Dawn” and “Walk East on Beacon.”

I’m only a member of the Brain Trust by injection and by proxy, but I wouldn’t use a Google Images search for this purpose and that is why I very seldom comment. I don’t know most of these old actors and movies, and I’m in awe of Mary, Eve, Benito, and all the other regulars who do have an extensive knowledge of Hollywood history. It would border on reprehensible to cheat and pretend to be one of them. Maybe in the 21st Century the concept of “no cheating” has fallen by the wayside in favor of “laziness”, “entitlement”, and “15 minutes of fame”.

It’s a week long silent film festival in Italy, showcasing silents from around the world. They charge relatively nothing to attend. It’s an opportunity to see things you might not get to see otherwise. I’ve been twice, and I’d love to go again. Mike is always looking to see “new” old films he’s never seen before.

Well, with these two, Lee J. Cobb and Dick Powell this is going to be the improbably titled Johnny O’Clock. I wonder if anyone else was struck at a young age with how many ‘Johnnys’ there were? When I was a kid (pre-internet, pre-IMdB) I tried to sort of keep track of them, Johnny Eager, Apollo, O’ Clock, Belinda, Concho, Angel, Dark, Trouble, and so on. And don’t forget Johnny Yuma and Johnny Staccato. Ha. I guess the screenwriters/producers felt the vaguely punchy title was worth some box-office.

Oh my gosh. Ha. Of course, Johnny Guitar. Gross oversight. Joan was sliding into self-parody at this point but as god is my witness I think the image of Sterling Hayden with a guitar slung over his shoulder (and you knew he’d have to strum it and warble a little tune, else why have it?) was the best part. With Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge chewing the scenery, I was surprised anything was left standing by the end of the film. Scott Brady as ‘Dancin’ Kid’. Whew.
