This week’s mystery movie has been the 1944 Warner Bros. picture “The Conspirators,” with Hedy Lamarr and Paul Henreid (Friday’s mystery guests), Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre (Friday’s mystery guests), Victor Francen, Joseph Calleia (Thursday’s mystery guest), Carol Thurston, Vladimir Sokoloff, Edward Ciannelli, Steven Garay (Thursday’s mystery guest) and Kurt Katch (Wednesday’s mystery guest). The screenplay was by Vladimir Pozner and Leo Rosten with additional dialogue by Jack Moffitt, based on a novel by Fredric Prokosch. The music was by Max Steiner. Directed by former mystery guest Jean Negulesco.
There were lots of interesting guesses on this film. Several people guessed “Mask of Dimitrios” which holds a special place in my heart because it was the first movie I stayed up all night to see when WGN in Chicago started running movies all night on the weekends in the early 1960s. But far too easy for the brain trust. “Gilda” was another popular guess. But again, too easy for the brain trust.
The DVD is available from TCM or for a few dollars less from Warner Archive.
For Monday, we have this distinguished gentleman in a three-piece suit.
Update: This is Rafael Storm.
And for Tuesday, we have a very elegant lady.
Update: This mystery guest prompted an interesting exchange with Howard Mandelbaum because imdb credits two women for this role: Carla Boehm and silent star Carmel Myers, who appears in “Tell It to the Marines” and the 1925 version of “Ben-Hur.” So much for imdb. Howard is certain that this is Carmel Myers and examining other photos, I would say he is correct. Mary Mallory seconds our mystery woman as Carmel Myers.
And for Wednesday, we have this gent on the phone.
Update: This is Kurt Katch.
Please congratulate Howard Mandelbaum, who identified our mystery movie and mystery guests.
For Thursday, we have this mystery person with a portrait of mystery dictator on the wall.
Update: This is Steven Geray.
Here’s another sinister mystery guest.
This is Joseph Calleia.
Please congratulate Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery guest), Jenny M (Wednesday’s mystery guest) and Sheila (Wednesday’s mystery guest).
For Friday, we have Sally Field and Burt Reynolds in “Smokey and the Bandit II.”
Update: Hedy Lamarr and Paul Henreid.
Together again.
Update: Sydney Greenstreet, left, Gregory Gaye, center and Peter Lorre.
Please congratulate Benito (Thursday’s mystery guest/wrong movie), Howard Mandelbaum (Thursday’s mystery guests), Mary Mallory (Thursday’s mystery guest, wrong movie), Mike Hawks (Thursday’s mystery guests, wrong movie), Jenny M (mystery movie, Thursday’s mystery guests), Julie Merholz (mystery movie, Thursday’s mystery guests), dlhartzog (Thursday’s mystery guest, wrong movie), Gary Martin (mystery movie, Thursday’s mystery guests), Don Danard (Thurday’s mystery guest), Richard Wegenscheide (Thursday’s mystery guest), Lee Ann, Thom and Megan (mysery movie and Wednesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests), Patrick (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery guests), LC (mystery movie and mystery cast), Bob Hansen (Thursday’s mystery guest), Sheila (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery guests).

I cannot name either Monday’s handsome gentleman or Tuesday’s elegant lady, but the scene appears to be a high-stakes card game. It is intriguing that both characters have formally dressed men and women standing behind them, watching the play, while Monday’s gentleman is in a serious dark suit but not formal attire. Does he belong in this fancy society? Who is he giving the side-eye?

A good observation. All will become clear in a few days.

This is a two shot that has been sliced in half. Notice that the man behind her is actually between the two of them; her chair is seen in his half and his sleeve is seen in her half. Now, if only I knew their names.

Good observation, but…. I prefer to run the mystery photos full frame, otherwise the resolution is poor. It’s not a two-shot, but a pan from our first mystery guest to our second. 🙂

Thursday is Joseph Calleia, whom you never forget after seeing ‘Golden Boy’. Even with the Hitler portrait in the background on Wednesday as an additional clue, Joe C. doesn’t help me recall the pictures’ name, which most likely was made in the 1941 to 1946 time frame.

I’m a bit late to the party, mainly because I didn’t recognize anybody until Joseph Calleia turned up yesterday, Now, with Paul Henried, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet turning up in quick succession today, I had to put in my two cents and guess THE CONSPIRATORS.
