This week’s mystery movie has been the 1944 Warner Bros. picture “The Conspirators,” with Hedy Lamarr and Paul Henreid (Friday’s mystery guests), Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre (Friday’s mystery guests), Victor Francen, Joseph Calleia (Thursday’s mystery guest), Carol Thurston, Vladimir Sokoloff, Edward Ciannelli, Steven Garay (Thursday’s mystery guest) and Kurt Katch (Wednesday’s mystery guest). The screenplay was by Vladimir Pozner and Leo Rosten with additional dialogue by Jack Moffitt, based on a novel by Fredric Prokosch. The music was by Max Steiner. Directed by former mystery guest Jean Negulesco.

There were lots of interesting guesses on this film. Several people guessed “Mask of Dimitrios” which holds a special place in my heart because it was the first movie I stayed up all night to see when WGN in Chicago started running movies all night on the weekends in the early 1960s. But far too easy for the brain trust. “Gilda” was another popular guess. But again, too easy for the brain trust.

The DVD is available from TCM or for a few dollars less from Warner Archive.

For Monday, we have this distinguished gentleman in a three-piece suit.

Update: This is Rafael Storm.

And for Tuesday, we have a very elegant lady.

Update: This mystery guest prompted an interesting exchange with Howard Mandelbaum because imdb credits two women for this role: Carla Boehm and silent star Carmel Myers, who appears in “Tell It to the Marines” and the 1925 version of “Ben-Hur.” So much for imdb. Howard is certain that this is Carmel Myers  and examining other photos, I would say he is correct. Mary Mallory seconds our mystery woman as Carmel Myers.

And for Wednesday, we have this gent on the phone.

Update: This is Kurt Katch.

Please congratulate Howard Mandelbaum, who identified our mystery movie and mystery guests.

For Thursday, we have this mystery person with a portrait of mystery dictator on the wall.

This is Joseph Calleia.

Please congratulate Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery guest), Jenny M (Wednesday’s mystery guest) and Sheila (Wednesday’s mystery guest).

  1. Sheila says:

    George Metaxa

  2. Howard Mandelbaum says:

Rafael Storm and Carmel Myers from “The Conspirators.”

  3. Candy Cassell says:

I cannot name either Monday’s handsome gentleman or Tuesday’s elegant lady, but the scene appears to be a high-stakes card game. It is intriguing that both characters have formally dressed men and women standing behind them, watching the play, while Monday’s gentleman is in a serious dark suit but not formal attire. Does he belong in this fancy society? Who is he giving the side-eye?

  4. Gary Martin says:

This is a two shot that has been sliced in half. Notice that the man behind her is actually between the two of them; her chair is seen in his half and his sleeve is seen in her half. Now, if only I knew their names.

Good observation, but…. I prefer to run the mystery photos full frame, otherwise the resolution is poor. It’s not a two-shot, but a pan from our first mystery guest to our second. 🙂

  5. Charles Kjelland says:

Looks like Lloyd Nolan today, one of his Martin Shayne movies?

  6. Howard Mandelbaum says:

The one and only Kurt Katch.

  7. Jenny M says:

    Kurt Katch?

  8. Lee Ann, Thom and Megan says:

    Ben Welden for Wednesday.

  9. Sheila says:

Kurt Katch? This one is driving me mad.

  10. juliemerholz says:

    Herschel Bernardi

  11. Benito says:

Thursday’s gent is the ubiquitous Joseph Calliea. Is the movie SABOTEUR?

  12. Howard Mandelbaum says:

Steven Geray and Joseph Calleia. To cast the latter AND Eduardo Ciannelli
    seems like a redundancy.

  13. Mary Mallory says:

Joseph Calleia in the second photo for today.

  14. Mary Mallory says:

Gilda? Argentina Brunetti Wednesday and Ludwig Donath also today?

  15. MIKE HAWKS says:

Or Steven Geray and Joseph Calleai in The Conspirators.

  22. Don Danard says:

    Today it’s Joseph Calleia.

  23. Richard Wegescheide says:

Thursday is Joseph Calleia, whom you never forget after seeing ‘Golden Boy’. Even with the Hitler portrait in the background on Wednesday as an additional clue, Joe C. doesn’t help me recall the pictures’ name, which most likely was made in the 1941 to 1946 time frame.

  24. Lee Ann, Thom, and Megan says:

The Conspirators, with Kurt Katch for Wednesday, and Steve
Geray and Joseph Calleia for Thursday.

  25. Patrick says:

Thursday’s mystery men are Steven Geray, probably not smoking in Der Führer’s presence and Joseph Calleia. The Conspirators from 1944.

The Conspirators (1944) w/Paul Henreid, Hedy Lamarr, Joseph Calleia, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Victor Francen….

    Friday’s guy is Joseph Calleia.

  28. Sheila says:

Steven Geray and Joseph Calleia, ‘Gilda’

  29. Sheila says:

Oops not ‘Gilda’–‘The Mask of Dimitrios’.

  30. Sheila says:

OMG. I’m going to kill myself with shame. ‘The Conspirators’, which is the first movie I thought it was, but I couldn’t place the lady. Arrrrrggghhhhh

  31. Mary Mallory says:

Hedy Lamarr, Paul Henreid, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet today.

  32. Mary Mallory says:

THE CONSPIRATORS. Steven Geray as the Nazi and is that Carmel Myers Tuesday?

The film is The Conspirators (1944), with Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre as the Friday twosome. Thursday featured Hedy Lamarr and Paul Henreid.

  35. Dan Nather says:

I’m a bit late to the party, mainly because I didn’t recognize anybody until Joseph Calleia turned up yesterday, Now, with Paul Henried, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet turning up in quick succession today, I had to put in my two cents and guess THE CONSPIRATORS.

  36. Mary Mallory says:

I also said Carmel Myers yesterday.
