Aug. 1, 1910: A short circuit in the attic starts a fire that destroys the Jewish Orphans Home at 535 Mission Road. Disregarding their own safety, Rabbi Sigmund Frey and Emma Rives got the youngsters out of the burning building and went back to search for any that might have been left behind. The fire claimed Frey’s large library of books, including the first Greek Bible published in the U.S., The Times said. Frey died in 1930 at the age of 77. |
