Dodgers, Braves Tie for Pennant

Sept. 28, 1959, Cover

The Dodgers and Braves would meet in a best-of-three playoff series
to determine the National League representative in the World Series.

Both teams won their regular-season finales to stay tied for first.
The Dodgers beat the Cubs, 7-1, and the Braves beat the Phillies, 5-2.
The playoffs would start in Milwaukee.

–Both teams finished with 86 victories, a major league record for the fewest wins for a first-place team.

–Danny McDevitt would start Game 1 for the Dodgers apparently bypassing Sandy Koufax, who earlier had been named the starter.

–The playoff games would be day games, thanks to a protest by the
Braves, according to a story in The Times. No clue what the Braves were
protesting.

–Tickets would be at regular season prices.

I just got it. “Alabama Brown” in “Abbie an’ Slats” is a takeoff on Tennessee Williams.

Sept. 28, 1959, Abel Gance

Abel Gance hopes to remake “Napoleon.” And Frank Capra offers insight on D.W. Griffith, calling him “the poor man’s Shakespeare.”
