American talking pictures take Paris by storm — and not in the good way. Note to copy desk, it's "revue" not "review."

June 20, 1929, Joan Crawford

June 20, 1929: Joan Crawford in "Hollywood Revue of 1929." Curiously enough, Georges Carpentier, who is mentioned in the story about the Paris riot, isn't listed in the credits of "Hollywood Revue" on imdb. It's quite interesting to see artwork (and splendid artwork at that) rather than studio photos in newspapers as late as 1929.

I saw “Hollywood Revue of 1929” recently and Carpentier is definitely not in it. The article can’t be talking about “Hollywood Revue of 1929”, it wasn’t released in France until October 1930, almost a month after this article was written.
Also, Carpentier was a Warner Bros player and “Hollywood Revue of 1929” was an MGM film. However, he was in the Warner Bros revue film of 1929 called “Show of Shows” — a direct competitor to the MGM revue film — and that’s probably the film the article meant.
My guess (and it is just speculation) is that “Show of Shows” was retitled for French distribution and the poor journalist got confused. I can’t find a thing about the French release, though. We may never know!
In “Hollywood Revue of 1929”, Crawford does indeed sing, and she’s mostly awful.
