On the Frontiers of Medicine

Aug. 20, 1889, Hotel Stewart

Aug. 20, 1889: The Hotel Stewart of San Bernardino is under new management.

Warning: The story below about H.H. Pyne, the unfortunate victim of Dentist Adams, is fairly graphic. In fact, no one was more upset than Dentist Adams, who paid a call on The Times and invited City Editor Spaulding to discuss the article's inaccuracies outside in the street.

Aug. 20, 1889, Dentistry

Calling The Times' story "a d–d lie," Dentist Adams pulls a gun on reporter R.H. Farquhar and City Editor Spaulding. City Editor Spaulding draws a pistol from his pocket and arrests Dentist Adams on charges of disturbing the peace.

The Times "gave a plain, unvarnished tale, which Mr. Pyne will verify in words when he can talk."

I hope you enjoyed this story as much as I have. I haven't laughed this hard in days.

The final paragraph about the plain, unvarnished tale reminds me so much of Kane’s speech about the newspaper giving the stories “simply and plainly”.
