In the Theaters — March 1, 1909

I thought it would be fun to spend a month going through The Times’ movie ads, starting with 1909 (check the Orpheum listing) and working forward. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

  1. None of these theaters is still in existence. The Orpheum mentioned above was the second of four theaters named Orpheum. The first one was at 125 S. Main Street, the second one – mentioned above – was at 227 S. Spring Street, the third one is at 630 S. Broadway which is now the Palace; and the fourth (and present one) is at 842 S. Broadway.

Those theater listings from above are almost all live performances. But the Orpheum seems to have added short films to its vaudeville bill.
Would guess that within only a few years, say 1915, we will see many theaters switch to movies, as vaudeville begins its slow fade out.
BTW: The ‘K-O’ in RKO, would be for the Keith – Orpheum circuit of vaudeville palaces. The ‘R’ would be for RCA.
RKO was formed by Joe Kennedy after the introduction of sound, ostensibly to make films for his paramour, Gloria Swanson. But old Joe, never one to tell the full truth about his interests, was also a major stock holder in RCA. Rumored that his personal manipulation of ‘Radio’ stock was one of the causes of the Crash of ’29.
