::

I picked Le Jour Se Leve because it looked interesting and it certainly is. This is a dark, moody film, beautifully photographed and the cast is terrific. Highly recommended.

The New York Times only wrote about the film during later revivals, and tributes to Jean Gabin and Marcel Carne.

    Hmm, on my phone that looked like Leon Ames but I’m not so sure of that now. What I thought was moustache may just be shadow! But I’m going with Leon Ames.

    I also thought deep sea diving suit initially. Now, it looks more like a hazmat suit to me and with those windows on the right, that seems more likely. No idea yet. Await Tuesday’s image with bated breath.

    Found a similar hazmat costume.

    I think it’s “On the Beach” 1959
    Will go back and look at cast images.

    Think my guess was not correct. Maybe a similar story but the haz suit is not quite the same. Ava G. (from last week) is in the movie I guessed, too. Oh well.

    Will keep looking.

    Wednesday is Arletty and Thursday is Jules Berry and I think this is DAYBREAK, which means Monday is Jean Gabin! I’ll try to watch this on Criterion soon because the description makes it sound like an essential noir and yet I haven’t heard much about it.

    Daybreak (Le Jour se Leve) 1939
    Mon – Jean Gabin (hazmat-suited for his foundry job)
    Tues – George Douking is the blind neighbor. Not sure of the guy on the bed in the BG.
    Wed – Arletty is the lady with the interesting hairstyle. Gabin is the BOTHG
    Thu – Jules Berry
    Fri – Jean Gabin and Jacqueline Laurent

    Interesting story line. The hero’s life situation kind of reminded me of the lead in one of your previous mystery puzzles, “Killer of Sheep”; working for hours at a “soul numbing job just to get by” to quote one blogger.
