Raymond Chandler Auction Update

The results are in for Doyle’s auction of Raymond Chandler items from the the Jean Vounder-Davis Collection.A beige typewriter with black keys in the bottom of a red travel case.

One of the more publicized items, Chandler’s Olivetti Studio 44 typewriter (estimated at $10,000 to $20,000), sold for $9,600, highest sale price of anything in the auction.


Chandler_farewellBooks generally surpassed the estimated sale price. Chandler’s first English edition of Farewell, My Lovely went for $4,800, well above the estimate of $800-$1,200. His copy of the film edition of the movie sold for $1,792, nearly three times the estimate of $400-$600. His copy of the film edition of The Big Sleep sold for $1,408, more than double the estimate of $400-$600.

A patterned silk scarf owned by Chandler (estimated at $400-$600) sold for $288, among the lowest sale prices of  items in the auction. His cocktail muddlers and bartender’s guide (estimated at $1,000-$1,500) sold for $3,200.

His Edgar Award honoring Farewell, My Lovely, from the Mystery Writers of America, a presentation edition of Edgar Allan Poe, limited to 15 copies, (estimated at $1,000-$1,500) sold for $2,432.

Chandler’s letter mentioning Humphrey Bogart (estimated at $600-$800) sold for $4,480. A handwritten letter in French defending The Long Goodbye (estimated at $1,000 to $1,500) sold for $2,304.

Letters to Chandler brought mixed results. A letter from John Steinbeck (estimated at $5,000-$8,000) sold for $4,800. A letter from Steinbeck about a school’s ban on Cannery Row (estimated at $2,000-$3,000) sold for $4,160.

Chandler’s poem to Jean, To One I Love (estimated at $1,000 to $1,500), sold for $1,536. A draft of To an Unknown Love (estimated at $1,200-$1,800) sold for $896.

A collection of scripts for a Philip Marlow TV program (estimated at $600-$800) sold for $1,024. An assortment of scripts and treatments (estimated at $600-$800) sold for $1,152.

Several items apparently did not sell, notably an archive of Chandler’s unpublished drafts of fantasy stories, estimated at $60,000-$80,000, and a libretto for an opera, estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

Buyers also apparently passed on jewelry given by Chandler: a brooch and pendant given to Jean (estimated $1,200-$1,800) and bracelets given to Sybil and Jean (estimated at $800-$1,200). Fan mail to Chandler (estimated at $800-$1,200) did not sell, and items relating to Grunion the dog and Carmichael the cat (estimated at $4,000-$6,000) apparently did not sell.
