I picked The Hunted by going through the trades after rejecting my previous potential mystery movies because some superfan uploaded dozens of images to IMDB in one case and I couldn’t find a passable print in another. As it was, I had to fiddle with the images a bit to make them even halfway decent. But the labor was worth it. The Hunted is a good yarn of B-movie noir, and it was shown at Noir City last year. I was intrigued because the writer was Steve Fisher, who wrote the screenplay for The Lady in the Lake, and offered his insights on the Black Dahlia case in a sidebar for the Los Angeles Evening Herald-Express.
I can’t imagine The New York Times reviewed The Hunted. I’m guessing even the lowly “alphabet critics” took a pass on this one. And indeed the NYT ignored our mystery movie.

For Monday, we have three mysterious guests.
Update: This is Michael Browne, center, and Edna Holland, right. The Black actress at left is unidentified.

For “Tricky Tuesday,” we have this merry mystery guest.
Update: This is Larry Valli.

For “Hm Wednesday,” we have this mysterious gent.
Update: This is Pierre Watkin in one of his more than 400 credited screen appearances.

For “Aha Thursday,” we have this mysterious gent. His mysterious companion has been cropped out due to insufficient mysteriousness and will appear Friday.
Update: Adding our mysterious leading man for Friday.
Update: This is Russell “Beefsteak Mine” Hicks, left, and Preston Foster.

We also have this mystery woman, as seen in Monday’s mystery photo.
Update: This is Edna Holland.

And this mysterious fellow.
Update: This is Frank Ferguson.

And this mysterious fellow. (Doughnuts and coffee only a dime!)
Update: This is Larry Blake.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s mysterious fellow), B.J. Merholz (Wednesday’s mystery chap), Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery guest) and Megan and Thom (Wednesday’s mystery chap).

For Friday, we have a mysterious gent.
Update: This is Preston Foster.

And our mysterious leading lady.
Update: This is Belita.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (mystery movie and all mystery guests), Greg (mystery movie and all mystery guests), Sheila (Wednesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests), B.J. Merholz (Thursday’s mysterious gent No. 1), Robert Morrissey (mystery movie, Thursday’s mysterious parole officer and Friday’s mystery leading lady), Megan and Thom (mystery movie and all mystery guests), Benito (Thursday’s mysterious seller of shares in the Beefsteak Mine) and Blackwing Jenny (Thursday’s mysterious lunch counter man).
Wild guess: “The Company She Keeps”?

With Russell Hicks, Frank Ferguson, Pierre Watkin, Larry Valli (clown), and Larry Blake (short order cook) I’m pretty sure the movie is The Hunted from 1948.

I LOVE Belita! I knew I had seen this one with the very first photo of the week, but of course I couldn’t remember Edna Holland’s name, though I knew she was a parole officer….I actually have this one on DVD: The Hunted, from 1948.

Our movie is The Hunted with Russell Hicks, Edna Holland, Frank Ferguson, and Larry Blake for today. Our guest from Tuesday is Larry Valli. For Monday, I think our policeman is Michael Browne, and I’m not sure whom the black actress is.
