Lettering over a blank background with a stick figure of The Saint

This week’s mystery film was Escape Route, an episode of the British TV series The Saint, with Roger Moore, John Gregson, Wanda Ventham, Ivor Dean, Donald Sutherland, Jean Marsh, Jeremy Burnham, Terry Yorke, Romo Gorrara, Vicki Wolf, Tony Doonan, Eric Mason, Edwin Brown, Walter Horsbrugh and George Zenios. The episode apparently aired in the UK in 1966, but wasn’t broadcast in the U.S. until 1967 or 1968, depending on the market.

I wanted to do something to remember Donald Sutherland, who died June 20. Unfortunately, most of his films are abundantly represented online with screen shots, even his appearance in The Avengers! So I went back to his second appearance in The Saint; he’s quite good, by the way, even at this point in his career.

Probably completely wrong, but my first thought was the 1966 Batman movie.

An interesting guess! But alas, I’m afraid not. Take heart, though, because all will become clear by Friday, or even Thursday. Possibly Wednesday!

Ha! On Monday I was leaning towards “French sailor” from the 1860s or so.

Now with “Tricky Tuesday” and the telephone my head is spinning. Maybe Monday’s guy works as a “French apache dancer” in the 1960s?

    Eagerly awaiting Wednesday.

I am wondering if this is a British film. I think I have seen the actress as an older woman, but can’t remember her name.

Aha, an automotive clue: it’s the Volvo P1800 driven by Roger Moore in “The Saint.” Thinking that’s George Zenios on Monday, Wanda Ventham on Tuesday and then Ivor Dean. Episode is called “Escape Route,” and features a prominent film star who recently passed.

Well, that’s Simon Templar’s P1800, so presumably we’ll see Roger Moore on Friday.

“The Saint” TV series: episode title “Escape Route” 1966

    Monday – George Zenios

    Tuesday – Wanda Ventham

    Wednesday – Ivor Dean

Thursday – Roger Moore (who also directed this episode) in the driver’s seat of Templar’s Volvo P1800.

Friday – Donald Sutherland’s doomed tough guy.

Guessing that Jean Marsh may be included in the Saturday breakdown images, maybe? First time I’ve seen her in a villain role.

My mother and I were big fans of the show, though we never saw the color episodes. Nice to revisit.
