::

I picked this version of Waterloo Bridge by going through the trades. It’s an excellent movie, though not nearly as well known as MGM’s 1940 remake with Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh. James Curtis, who wrote a first-rate biography of Whale, covers the production of the film thoroughly and calls Waterloo Bridge one of Whale’s best films.

I’m going to guess that we’re in Mordaunt Hall territory and that he generally praised the picture because it originated as a play. Generally a safe bet with The New York Times, but not always.

Nailed it! (Sept. 5, 1931):

James Whale, who directed several stage companies of Journey’s End and who was also responsible for the film of that memorable contribution, has fashioned a praiseworthy picture from Robert Emmet Sherwood’s play Waterloo Bridge. This screen offering, which is now at the Mayfair, is somewhat sketchy in substance, but it is acted cleverly and there is imagination in the employment of the camera and the microphone.

    Tuesday’s actor is Ethel Griffies in an early role. She’s a big fave of mine – but she just has too many credits to wade through, so I’ll hold my breath for further developments!

    Thursday’s guy looks like Lee J. Cobb to me, but I think that if “Cobb” it is, my guess on the era of the film is thrown out.

    I may be a wait until “the Saturday reveal” gal this week.
