::

I picked Bright Victory by going through the trades and thought the story of a soldier struck blind and learning to see beyond his racism was appropriate for Juneteenth. It’s a strong film and one that hasn’t appeared recently on TCM (it was last aired in 2018).

I’m going to guess that it got a positive review, possibly with a few quibbles, from Bosley Crowther.

And this week, I called it (The New York Times, Aug. 1, 1961):

A story of a blinded war veteran and his adjustment to a life without sight — that is, without sight in the literal sense of vision through the eyes — is told with inspiring portrayal and great objective solicitude in Universal-International’s Bright Victory, which came to the Victoria yesterday. As an outsider’s observation of a blinded man’s struggles and triumphs, of his pitiful despair at his affliction and his revival through courage, care and love, this drama, directed by Mark Robson, would be hard to beat. And it is played with extraordinary perception by Arthur Kennedy in the leading role.

    Monday’s guy appears to be inside some kind of vehicle, not sure why I think that – maybe the what looks like a shadowy driver in the distance screen right. And there are other injured people on board.
    Could be the interior of a plane I guess…hmmm.
    A war picture maybe? I’m meandering – which means I have no guess.

    Maybe Tuesday’s BOTHG is Frank Lovejoy so let’s go with “Home of the Brave”.

    This film might be ’51 Bright Victory. If so, Monday’s hunky actor who does look here a lot like Greg Morris, would be Bernie Hamilton. Bof the head guy would be Arthur Kennedy I think. Opposite bofthg on Tues is my guess from yesterday, James Edwards.
