This week’s mystery movie has been the 1954 Italian film “Voyage to Italy” or “Journey to Italy,” with George “Georges” Sanders and Ingrid Bergman. It was directed by Roberto Rossellini.
The film is available on DVD from the Criterion Collection.
Writing in 2013, film critic A.O. Scott noted that the New York Times never reviewed the film when it debuted in America.
Scott wrote:
The 1950s are full of movies that were initially greeted, by critics and audiences, with indifference or derision, only to be hailed as masterpieces in hindsight. “Vertigo,” “The Searchers” and “The Sweet Smell of Success” are among the best-known examples of this kind of revisionism. Another, only slightly less famous, is Roberto Rossellini’s “Viaggio in Italia,” a film so maligned and neglected in 1955, the year of its American release, that it did not receive a review in The New York Times.
For Monday, we have a mystery gent.
Update: This is Anthony La Penna (Ingrid Bergman was cropped out because of her utter lack of mysteriousness).
For Tuesday, we have a mystery woman.
Update: This is Maria Mauban.
For Wednesday, we have a mystery woman. I have cropped out the leading man due to his utter lack of mysteriousness. Look for him on Friday.
Update: This is Anna Proclemer.
For Thursday, we have a mystery woman.
Update: This is Natalia Ray.
For Friday, showing a total lack of mysteriousness, our leading man and leading lady.
Update: This is the completely unmysterious “Georges” Sanders and Ingrid Bergman.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and mystery guests), Mary Mallory (mystery movie and mystery guests) and Syliva E. (mystery movie and mystery guests).
Why the long face, Nicol Williamson? Best known as Merlin in EXCALIBUR…

Even with my, perhaps correct, assumptions, I cannot yet place the face. But I will state the main assumption: The movie is often cited as Billy Wilder’s funniest. Why? Because (second assumption) that the bit of costume we see in the front seat is worn by a character named Daphne.

George Sanders and Ingrid Bergman in Journey to Italy with a lot of folks I never heard of (and I thought I knew about a lot of actors). What a wimpy title for a mom pitcher.
