Look what I found! Why if it isn’t….

Uh-oh. New YORK?
[Update 2: Yes, this is the Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles in “The Killer That Stalked New York.” I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw the shots of the Bradbury at the end of the film. I walked past the building again last night and no, there’s no ledge up there. I’m wondering if it was added with special effects or lost during the Sylmar quake. I’ll see if I can hunt up some old photos of the building. There are several shots of the Cozy and Central theater marquees in action, which is nice to see. I’m starting to think that Columbia really liked filming the Bradbury, because it’s also in “Between Midnight and Dawn.”
[Bob Hansen also recognized the building and Dewey Webb and Julie Merholz identified the movie. ]
[Update: Please congratulate B.J. Merholz, Mary Mallory, Keith Thursby, Lee Rivas, Gary Martin, Herb Nicholas and Robert Dudnick for identifying the building/location.
[And please congratulate Greg Clancey, Mike Hawks and William Stansel for identifying the movie, yes, from that one frame.]

And then there’s this:

Somebody’s out on the ledge. Wait… a ledge?

Where’s the darn ledge? It’s not in the shot from Google Street View.

Hullo, what’s this?

And look what else we’ve got….

You think anybody will notice that big light in the shot? No, probably not.

And here’s a reverse angle showing….

OK, there is definitely somebody out on a ledge….

What do you mean “Pig N Whistle?” “Union Oil?”

A rooftop view of movie marquees!

Now we have two mystery people on the ledge.

And to get this shot, the camera would have to be hanging five stories in the air over the street…. or not.

More neon!

And we say goodbye before our closing shots…

And we dissolve to …. HEY!

You guys kill me.

I suppose you think this is very funny.

My recollection is that I saw NO WAY OUT in 1950 at the Million Dollar and AMBUSH AT TOMAHAWK GAP in 1953 at the Cozy, both on Broadway, 3rd or 4th sts.

Putting two and two together I would say Night and the City, 1950.

Is it Skid Row? I mean, every major city in the US has one, but L.A. is the only place I know where it’s proudly identified as such.

I think it’s around 1st or 2nd street, can’t see the marquees or people. Is that CHINA GIRL on the marquee or THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE?

I’m not a film historian or even expert on “old LA”, but my guess on this photo is Cozy Theater would be at 320 S. Broadway (near Bradbury Bld) & a shot from the film “The Killer That Stalked New York”, 1950. Mostly filmed in NYC, there is a listing on IMDB that some part was filmed in LA.

sure looks like the front of the Bradbury Building in the left corner of the frame…. or am I starting to see that building everywhere?

Third and Broadway looking east on Broadway. The Cozy Theater was a giveaway. In the 50’s it was .15 cents for three movies, cartoons, newsreels and trailers; I went there.

Could it be that the arched doorway to the left is the Bradbury Building again? Is this an ext. from China Girl.

i do not know the movie, but the setting is the exterior of the bradbury bldg.

Could be Broadway because there are two movie theaters next to each other. Cars look as though they’re from the Thirties.

With a lot of hints … the Bradbury Building in downtown LA? That would make the Times Square shot kinda startling.

I don’t think there was ever a ledge, I think they just created a fake one for dramatic purposes.
