“industry veterans have said that the days of shooting quintessential New York shows (like “Seinfeld” and “Friends”) in California are numbered.”
—New York Times, July 21, 2011
The L.A. Daily Mirror and L.A. Crime Beat sculpted from Twitter feeds to the most exacting specifications by the bots at paper.li. The bots that do L.A. Crime Beat seem to like TMZ’s story about Kim Kardashian porn tapes. They must have been studying SEO 101.
Everything runs in cycles. Network television originated first in New York, with a lesser assist from Chicago. Only when ‘live’ gave way to film and tape, did the axis shift to Los Angeles. For a long while New York was a ghost town as far as filmed entertainment was concerned. It didn’t get healthy again until the eighties. The look and feel of its grit cannot be matched on a sound stage or back-lot. All one need do is look at ‘Law & Order: L.A.” and compare its lack of longevity with the New York based ‘Law & Order’ series to understand why NYC location shooting is worth all the trouble. It simply feels more visceral.
