There’s more information on the jump!

Whittington was clearly ahead of his time in advocating secession of the San Fernando Valley in this 1977 advertising piece. His “Declaration of Proclamation,” delivered to England, appears below.

  13. Arye Michael Bender says:

Gary Owens. BTW: The hand cup to one ear was an old announcer’s trick to get an approximation of how one sounds to others. It was something announcers did in the twenties and thirties before the wide use of earphones. Way back then, NBC insisted that their staff network announcers wear tuxedos to add dignity. Although no one would see them, it was believed the soup and fish would add gravitas. No one could do fake gravitas better than Owens.

I love Gary Owens, but even he’d tell you that the picture is of “Sweet” Dick Whittington, the radio personality, actor and former Laugh In cast member.
