Location Sleuth — ‘Farewell, My Lovely’

Here’s another historic location in the 1975 film “Farewell, My Lovely,” a scene with Robert Mitchum and Jack O’Halloran at the Far East Cafe on 1st St. in Little Tokyo.

[These images are a little funky. They’re frame grabs from a copy of the film I taped off the air many years ago and recently transferred to DVD.]

Ah, yes. The Far East Cafe in Little Tokyo. Last time I was there it was a visual Blast From The Past, a 1930-ish gem. Chinese food, of course. Japanese folks love Chinese food. I hear its been partually updated. Progress is a killer. I’m against it. “Fiddlesticks,” says Molly.

That’s Moose Malloy. Would recognize him anywhere. Always lovesick, the big lug.

You’re right it “was” the Far East Cafe” in Little Tokyo which my parents took us to in the 50’s. I say “was” because it was closed in the late 80’s, lay dormant, and was then gutted in the 90’s; and restored to it’s original look around 2001(?). Anyway, the menu had changed, the prices greatly increased, the food was….well… I stopped paying attention at that point. I hear it’s a swinging place again for the youngsters.
