Nov. 11, 1940 — Growl: Has Hollywood completely forgotten John Boles? Jimmie Fidler asks.

On the jump, a classic example of tombstoned headlines, one of the worst I have ever seen.

Young persons: This is called “tombstoning” because the headlines are slammed together like tombstones in a cemetery. I point this out because you will never (at least you should never) see this type of layout in modern newspaper design. This example is particularly dreadful because the separate headlines can be read as one: “Army Man Sees Willkie Hears Democracy Peril From 30,000.”

Even in the 1940s, which is not an era known for attractive newspaper design, this was poor workmanship.
