   This was in the days still close to the war against fascism the nation fought for sheer survival. Nowadays there’d be skinheads posing for cell photos with them. And, to be fair, a lot of people still disgusted with Nazis. But chasing them down the street trying to bash in their heads with a block of cement? We are much more tolerant of Nazis now.

   Re the Nov 2 1960 Mirror front page,
   One of the major bits of apocrypha the look back at 1960 has proven to me, is the oft-stated belief Eisenhower was very standoffish toward Nixon in 1960, supposedly barely being able to get out his name in endorsement. These articles reveal nothing of the sort, and the exact opposite.
   In 1968 when Eisenhower was in the hospital during the Republican convention that nominated Nixon for the second time, the word was Eisenhower refused to endorse Nixon, so Nixon had to resort to asking the convention in his acceptance speech to “win this one for Ike!” as the only way he could ever get his name coupled with Eisenhower’s. Apparently, not so.
   Larry, you comment repeatedly on the breathtaking quality of the Times’ rapture for Richard Nixon. What of the Mirror’s editorials? From the look of this front page and others, they also served enthusiastically in Nixon’s court of approval.
