An actor can never predict the quality or success of any film project. There are so many variables that must come together to create something of perfection to know what the final outcome will be, and whether or not the work will connect with an audience. John Hurt gives considerable power to every role he plays. I doubt that he ever holds back.
A very intriguing side note on The Elephant Man most people miss: The inimitable Mel Brooks was the producer behind the project. His taste, passion, and appreciation for artists was most responsible for the perfection of the film.
