  1. Chris Morales's avatar Chris Morales says:

Nice to see one of the unsung Dodger greats, Carl Furillo, receive his last hurrah.
Furillo was a .299 lifetime hitter and owned the famous right field carom/wall in Ebbets Field. This was where Brooklyn tailor Abe Stark’s advertising sign read “Hit Sign, Win Suit” As Carl Erskine recalled, “Nobody ever hit the sign-Furillo played in front of it”. His throwing arm earned him the nickname “The Reading Rifle”.
The Dodgers released him early in the 1960 season to make way for Frank Howard. An angry Furillo sued the Dodgers; as I recall, contending that they didn’t have the right to release him while he was injured. He was awarded a modest sum, something rather remarkable considering the Rerserve Clause hadn’t yet been challenged.
In any event, he is overlooked, but was one of the real greats in Dodger history.
