  Oct. 15, 1940, Tom Treanor

Tom Treanor files a story on a military parade in Hungary. There were no bands in the parade. “Machine guns play the tune in a modern army,” he says.

Oct. 15, 1940 — CONFIDENTIAL COMMUNIQUE TO Carole Lombard: Your very dramatic performance in "They Knew What They Wanted" is really GREAT. But don't let critics' praise blind you to the fact that lots of faithful fans will be disappointed if you now disdain those zany roles you do so well, Jimmie Fidler says.

Oct. 15, 1910: I pulled up an Oct. 15 issue of the paper and immediately noticed the new headline font. The Times was being published at its auxiliary plant in what is now Chinatown but had to buy all new cases of type. Notice that an artist re-created the Page 1 nameplate and simplified the Part II nameplate.

In 1913, The Times will again alter the nameplate to show the destruction of the old building and add the new building.

Nixon Accuses Kennedy of Using Notes During Debate

  image

Oct. 14, 1960: Vice President Richard Nixon accuses Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass.) of breaking their agreement by using notes during their televised debate. Press secretary Pierre Salinger said the only item Kennedy had was the text of President Eisenhower's letter to Sen. Green, but later added that Kennedy had a “copy of a page from a book by Gen. Matthew Ridgway, former Army chief of staff, and some quotations from the late Secretary of State Dulles."

If you recall the debates, you'll remember that Nixon sweated heavily under the hot TV lights, and The Times says, "The studio, at the request of his aides, had lowered the temperature from its normal 72 deg. to a chill 58 but even so, he mopped perspiration from his upper lip and chin 13 times during the program while cameras were focused elsewhere."

Found on EBay – Parkey Sharkey

Whiskey Road A copy of Parkey Sharkey’s “Whiskey Road” has been listed on EBay. According to the vendor, that is an authentic Parkey Sharkey signature with the date, 1966.

“Whiskey Road” is quite difficult to find. It’s more of a brochure than a book and much of it is Sharkey’s letters to Paul Coates of the Mirror. Still, I’m glad I have a copy. This one – and it looks rather beat up – is priced at $25

Oct. 12, 1940: If Hollywood wants to please fans in EVERY section of America (which it must do or else take a severe licking now that remunerative foreign markets are lost) it must get back to fundamentals of good entertainment, to the BASIC EMOTIONAL VALUES. People everywhere, no matter how they earn their livings, enjoy love, laughter and excitement, Jimmie Fidler says.

Oct. 12, 1960: The race between Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Vice President Richard Nixon is so close that if the election were held today, the edge in the popular vote would probably be determined by a small minority who are – as of now — undecided, a Gallup poll finds.
