Beebe, who was fatally injured in a beating by LAPD officers, is halted when Officer John Yates kicks Herald-Express photographer Edward Phillips in the groin. Recall that it was the police attack on another photographer, covering the 1956 wreck of the San Diegan south of downtown, that began unraveling the cozy relationship between the press and the police in Los Angeles.
