The Friday photo appears on imbd in which the couple is identifuied as Joan Chandler and that director, uh, Alfred Hitchcock…in a still from Rope, 1948. Until his recent death, Farley Granger lived just up the road here in easter Pennsylvania. I saw him once at a social gt together: nice guy.

Joan Chandler was John Garfield’s girlfriend in ‘Humoresque’ before that other Joan stole him away. Hmmm, after that dramatic ending. I wonder if he went back to her?

  26. This Hitchcock brunette reminds me of another mystery Hitchcock brunette, the actress who played Carlotta Valdez in the dream sequence in Vertigo, who, according to IMDB, is Joanne Genthon, in her only listed film. I am convinced after viewing many times, that she is also the woman who appears in the opening credits, with zoom to her eye starting the iconic Vertigo spiral, but I can find no confirmation in the many essays and critiques of this much studied film. Perhaps someone in your brain trust knows.

I realize this is an old comment, but I’m convinced as well, but actually despite what IMDB has listed there’s an interview that Joanne did a few years after Vertigo stating that she was a dancer in Oklahoma, Calamity Jane, and even played the Banshee in “Darby O’Gill and the Little People” It’s odd that Vertigo is her only listed film on anything. She was even uncredited in that originally..it makes me wonder if she didn’t necessarily want to be “well known”
