‘Citizen Kane’ — April 10, 1941

  April 10, 1941, Citizen Kane

April 10, 1941: "Citizen Kane" does occasionally sink to dullness because of its reiterations, notwithstanding it can be classified as, in a number of aspects, one of the most arresting pictures ever produced, Edwin Schallert says.

Then came the disparaging articles in the Hearst owned press. Kudos to the old Times for not conforming with the indirect boycott Hearst was hoping for. Though permanent damage was done to Welles’ career and personal psyche.
It didn’t take that much time for the public to realize the greatness of ‘Kane’. And in an odd twist, it was television that came to the rescue. Millions of people saw scratched, commercial interrupted, sixteen millimeter prints on local television stations and discovered something wonderful.

I know this is heresy, but I am just not that big a Citizen Kane fan. I think it has a great script, and some great performances, but the big sell for me is the cinematography, not the direction. I actually prefer Magnificent Ambersons.
Welles was talented, but he was also a pompous blowhard, and one of the worst actors of his day (ever see him ruin Lady from Shanghai with his Lucky Charms accent? Oy!).
