This post has been corrected. See the note at the bottom for details [Update 3: This is Madeleine Carroll and her husband Philip/Phillip Astley in a photo published Nov. 7, 1936]. [Update 2: We have another mystery here. Some comments are getting lost in the ether: Mary Mallory and Bob Levinson tell me they left comments but for some reason, nothing appeared in TypePad. I have even started checking the spam filter in case something goes astray, but no luck. My apologies. If this continues I'll have to figure out some other way to handle the comments.] [Update: Please congratulate Gerald McCann, Periwinkle, Carmen, Dewey Webb, Lee Ann, LC and Claire Lockhart for identifying our mystery guest! ] It’s mystery time!
There’s a new photo on the jump! For the record, 4:10 p.m., March 31: A previous version of this post credited Barry Levinson with identifying our mystery woman. He is Bob Levinson.] |
[Update: Madeleine Carroll and Count Richard de la Roziere, March 8, 1941.] Here’s our mystery lady with a mystery companion!
[Madeleine Carroll and John Gielgud in "Secret Agent" in a photo published July 12, 1936.] [Update: Please congratulate Rick, Mike Hawks and Mark Heimback-Nielsen for identifying our mystery woman. Several folks also identified our mystery guest and the film.] Here’s our mystery guest with a mystery companion! Great lighting, no?
[Update: Madeleine Carroll, with Fred MacMurray, pauses to throw her old-fashioned wedding bouquet. Her Southern Belle gown has sheer lace insets with clusters of flowers. Published June 8, 1941. Everybody knows Fred wore a wedding ring in “Double Indemnity,” when he was supposed to be single. Here he is in “Virginia” with Madeleine Carroll and neither of them are wearing wedding rings.] [Update: Lots of readers recognized our mystery folks – and this movie! Please congratulate Pamela Porter, Kauma, Dennis Gilliam, Julie Merholz, Periwinkle, Cold in Phoenix and Eve Golden for identifying our mystery lady. ] Here’s our mystery gal with a (totally not) mystery companion.
[Update: French actor Fernand Gravet and Madeleine Carroll are pictured today aboard the liner France on arrival in New York from Europe. They are to appear in a new Broadway comedy. Miss Carroll has lived in Paris for three years, Aug. 6, 1964. The play was “Beekman Place,” which closed after 29 performances, without Carroll in the cast.] Here’s our mystery lady with another mystery companion! |

Persian lamb always creeped me out, it looks like brains. My mother had a Persian lamb jacket with black mink trim that scared the heck out of me when I was little.

It’s Fred MacMurray with MC in Honeymoon in Bali. Did you forget about me yesterday? I identified MC with Gielgud and Secret Agent, as well as identifying the first photo as her first husband Astley and the second photo as her third husband Lavorel.

Phillip Astkey…Count Richard de la Roziere…Fernard Gravet. Of course I knew who those guys were. How silly of me. Gravet was in “Early To Bed” in 1933. I think I saw that one at Grauman’s Chinese theater. I sat right behind Sammy Goldwyn and Anna Sten. They were holding hands.
