Feb. 3, 1961: Paul Coates digs into his mail bag and comes up with an invitation to watch amateur boxing at the Olympic Auditorium … because he needs to learn how to defend himself.

TV character actor Patrick "Paint Your Wagon" Hawley stakes a claim to three blocks of beachfront between Laguna Avenue and Broadway in Laguna Beach.

"It's up to them to prove that somebody else owns it — and I don't think they can," Hawley says.

Actually, they did.
