This is the Aug. 12, 1937, premiere of “High, Wide and Handsome.” Did Mike Hawks say Lynne Overman at the microphone? He nailed it! Here’s the back of the picture … … and this is a better look. The Yacht Club Boys? Please congratulate Mary Mallory for spotting Judy Canova! Here’s a mystery fellow at the microphone… … a bit of the mystery theater … … a bushel basket of flashbulbs … … the mystery crowd in bleachers …. … and in the windows … … the red carpet … … mystery celebrities in tuxedoes and furs … … wait a minute. That looks like a previous mystery guest …. [I believe this is Bob “Bazooka” Burns.] Sure is! |

Bob Burns is there, along with Darryl Zanuck it looks like and possibly James Dunn at the microphone at the Carthay Circle Theatre, which was a Fox Theatre.

Looks like Ronnie Reagan in photo #2 and Nancy Davis in photo #8. Are you sure those are flash bulbs or are they bulbs for the big square floodlight next to the bushel of whatevers? The policeman with the “Sam Brown” belt is interesting, too.

Don’t recognize any of the mystery guests, but the location is most certainly the Fox Carthay Circle Theatre (foolishly demolished in 1970).

I think that’s judy Canova in the shawl by Burns. Zanuck wears a white jacket among the blurred people, and I think Sid Grauman has his back to the camera beside Zanuck.

In the red carpet photo, the blurry lady in the center, wearing what appears to be a dark fur and almost facing us, looks like Louella Parsons. But half the men in these photos look like Melvyn Douglas to me, so I could be way off.

The Yacht Club Boys?
I just saw them in “Artists and Models” (also with Judy Canova and made in 1937, same year as this pic was taken) and can’t spot them in the picture, but that’s not saying much. Perhaps they strategically scattered themselves throughout the crowd at random intervals.
