[Update: It was quite a pleasant surprise to be rummaging through a file of old pictures and stumble across one showing George Gershwin. Judging by the response, the “brain trust” (my nickname for the Daily Mirror readers) enjoyed it as well. The original caption information is on the jump. ] Look at all these mystery folks! Let’s get a better look …. |

Here’s our mystery talent…. … our mystery fellow at the camera …. … but wait a moment. Who’s our mystery fellow with the pipe? … and our mystery guys standing around. |
Ginger Rogers is singing to George (with the pipe) and Ira Gershwin and director Mark Sandrich I believe.

(Much as I enjoy looking at these photos, the “mystery” has pretty much disappeared from movieland)

Great shot of the filming of “Shall We Dance.” That’s Ginger Rogers, of course, with director Mark Sandrich seated in front of the camera. Next to Sandrich (with the pipe) is George Gershwin.

Well of course we have Ginger Rogers on the set of “Shall We Dance” (1937) with director Mark Sandrich and composer George Gershwin watching. I think this is the “They All Laughed” number.

Might the guy with the pipe be the director, Mark Sandrich
One of the fellows must be Hermes Pan, but I don’t know which one.

Shooting ‘Shall We Dance,’ with Ginger Rogers. So I guess the director must be Mark Sandrich.

It’s George Gershwin, with his brother Ira Gershwin (glasses) and director Mark Sandrich (hat) watching Ginger Rogers doing the “They All Laughed” number in SHALL WE DANCE (1937) (based on the dress she’s wearing).

Hmmm…Did Jimmy Durante smoke a pipe?
Of the three “stand around guys”, the one on the left must be related to either the late Gene Siskel (critics demeanor) or Kevin Spacey (actors’ intensity)!

Okay, here goes. Some certainities, some educated guesses. Everybody is watching Ginger Rogers in “Shall We Dance.” From the cinematographer David Abel to Director Mark Sandrich in the director’s chair to the Gershwins, George and Ira, to choreographer Hermes Pan to Producer Pandro Berman. Also, with our main mystery star totally a non-mystery I guess I’m about 20th to identify her. She’s one of my favorites and I loved the movie.
