Dec. 24, 1980: The nation’s Christmas tree is lit for 417 seconds, one for each day the 52 hostages have been held in captivity in Iran…. San Fernando Police Officer Dennis Webb is shot to death while questioning a young man about the robbery of a 7-Eleven. The killer evidently took Webb’s patrol car and abandoned it eight miles away.

And from Kenya, Charles T. Powers files a first-rate piece of writing on the future of college graduates in Kenya.

On the jump, examples of The Times covers: the Morning Final, Late Final and home edition.

  1. Ronald Emmis's avatar Ronald Emmis says:

Officer Webb has a memorial page for him over at Find-a-Grave:
    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Webb&GSfn=Dennis&GSbyrel=in&GSdy=1980&GSdyrel=in&GSob=n&GRid=16430038&df=all&
This site, by the way, is a great resource for the final resting places of the famous and not-so-famous. And if someone is missing, a participant with the right info can create a page for that person. It looks like someone did one for Dennis Webb. If you look at the comments on the site, his widow was still alive in 2009 and she still loves him and misses him, 30 years later.
