These old newpaper clippings are great, i think they should all be digitised world wide and put online, like google wants to do with books? It would be a massive undertaking but a huge wealth of information. Imagine being able to search all newspapers on a particular date, i can think of a few id like to see, Man on the moon, world cup 1966, JFKs assasination, etc etc.

The UN post offered to Adlai Stevenson was a small bone thrown by JFK to the staunch supporters of the former Governor of Illinois.
Over Labor Day, 1960 JFK visited Eleanor Roosevelt at Hyde Park, seeking her endoresement. Like many Old Guard of the Left, held the Kennedy sons up to the reputation of their father. She told Kennedy that it would take the appointment of Stevenson to Secretary of State to elicit her endorsement. JFK passed, knowing as LBJ, Truman and most of the Democrats of the day did, that Stevenson had a strong and loyal base in the party, but privately was a very difficult person to deal with; ego driven and given to a prima donna sense of self. The public did not see this side of him, hence the appointment to a prestigious post, albeit one where he had little real power.
