Update: Yes, this is Thelma Todd, above, in “Follow Through.” I’m a bit pressed for time this morning so I’ll be back later today with more info. Stay tuned for a little Toddiana! Isn’t this a great wristwatch? Our “mystery” guest is wearing it. Last week’s mystery guest was Mack Sennett. The Keystone Kops and Bathing Beauties mystery photos were taken from his photo file. There’s a new photo on the jump! |
Congratulations to Steven Bibb, who recognized these doors and plans to visit them the next time he’s in Los Angeles! Also Dewey Webb, Sarah and Dennis Gilliam!
Special of the day: Mystery! Please congratulate Mary Mallory for identifying the mystery guest, the mysterious doors, yesterday’s mystery woman and for being on the hunt for the mystery wristwatch!
For Friday, our mystery gal is draped in some sort of fabric. Nice anklet, ma’am. Please congratulate Rick Scott, Benito, Pat in Michigan, Mike Hawks and Allison Francis for identifying her! |
Is it Babe Didrickson Zaharias?

Glenna Collett Vare? Yeah, I just guessed a random golfer from the era, but I gotta try.

Thanks for doing this for me! I recognize those doors as being the ones (still there I believe, will have to check again when I am LA in Jan) to Thelma Todd’s sidewalk cafe.

Thelma Todd? Or someone connected with that case? (If it is her–and even if it isn’t–will be interested to see how anyone could possibly be expected to deduce identity of mystery guest that from first picture.)

Could the clues link to the mysterious death of Thelma Todd? She made several golf movies and was part owner of a nightclub named Joya’s that may have figured in her death.

It’s Thelma Todd and her roadside cafe. I’ve been there!

Just a stab because the mystery occurred in December. These photos have something to do with the death of Thelma Todd. She owned a hilltop restaurant. Did at least one golf short with Charley Chase. The lady in the last photo looks awfully sad.

The blonde is Thelma Todd. Is that her cafe on PCH?

Not too sporting once major figure is ID’ed but it’s May Whitehead. . . and Thelma. . .uh, breading Capon Joya? (Wanna really throw ’em a curve someday? Run a picture of Winifred Chapman.)

The watch has me stumped, but the doors are to the private club upstairs from Thelma Todd’s Sidewalk Cafe. I believe the first woman is May Whitehead, and the second is Thelma Todd.

The doors are the entrance to Thelma Todd’s Roadside Cafe. Of course, that’s her dishing out chicken and draped with fabric. I am assuming that the first photo is Roland West, with the watch and club.

Ah, Thelma Todd is the mystery woman. Since there’s a putter and grass visible in the wristwatch photo, is it from “Follow Thru,” the wonderful 1930 two-color Technicolor feature in which she appears with Buddy Rogers, Jack Haley and Zelma O’Neal?
