Very interesting take from Ms. Hopper on Orson Welles. What many readers may not have known at the time was that Hopper’s arch rival, Louella Parsons, perhaps in an effort to ingratiate herself with her boss, William Randolph Hearst, spearheaded the chain’s efforts to vilify Welles because of ‘Kane’s’ obvious references to Hearst as the model for Charles Foster Kane.
On the metronome? Doubt it. Welles had a master’s instinct for pacing. It was King Vidor who used the metronome technique in ‘The Big Parade’. Personally heard Vidor describe how he used it in the Arden Woods sequence of ‘Parade’.
