Nearly everybody (even poor country boy Fibber McGee!) recognized this week’s mystery guest as Evelyn Nesbit. So here’s another mystery. This handout photo from Warner Bros., dated June 1939, was in Evelyn Nesbit’s photo file and is labeled as being Nesbit. But it’s clearly not her. I went through the movie ads from June 1939 trying to determine what Warners had in release then. I think we can safely rule out "Juarez." So who is it?

evelyn_thawl_ebay I’m always impressed with Daily Mirror readers. Dewey Webb solved the mystery of what happened: Evelyn Thawl became Evelyn Nesbit Thaw. And Mary Mallory found a copy of the picture on EBay. The photo appeared in a series of cards issued in 1936 by Ardath cigarettes.  Awesome work!

It might not be for a release, it might be just a personality shot. The studios took and sent out lots of those too, but usually there’s a caption or code on the front to help with identification. Sometimes they got in a hurry though, and you find the wrong caption or code on a photo. I only see two musicals that year, NAUGHTY BUT NICE with Gale Page, and ON YOUR TOES with Vera Zorina. This could be just one of the chorus. Someone at the Times must have written the name on the back, the studios never did that. This could be like the Constance Talmadge photo in the Lillian Gish file.

  4. It may be Evelyn Poe, who was in two Vitaphone shorts, “Rhapsody In Zoo” and “Melody Masters: Roger Wolfe Kahn and His Orchestra” in 1937 and two RKO features, “Old Man Rhythm” and “To Beat The Band” in 1935.

Maybe someone in Photo needed to jot down a note, and this photo of an anonymous starlet was handy.

Evelyn Thaw. It could be a command meant for the Lady Eve to chill out.

Evelyn Thawl starred in the short “Out Where the Stars Begin,” a parody of musical films, that Warner Bros. released in 1940, and “Musical Movieland,” a short that WB released in 1948 with numbers cut from other shorts, like “Out Where the Stars Begin.” I’ll check files on Monday.
