April 13, 1960: Candlestick Park opened in San Francisco and The Times' Al Wolf described the stadium as "magnificent."

Candlestick Park?

The Giants defeated the Dodgers in the battle over getting their West Coast ballpark built although years would prove the Dodgers certainly had the better location.

"As predicted, the prevailing wind, careening across the diamond from left to right, makes it a delight for left-handed hitters but frustrating for right-handers," Wolf wrote. "Actually the wind was the deciding factor here this afternoon."

How many times would that line show up in game stories from Candlestick?

Vice President Richard Nixon was among the opening day crowd and The Times, being the pro-Nixon paper it was, mentioned his appearance in the game story and the notes. Never enough Nixon, of course.
