A Kinder, Simpler Time Dept.: Your Movie Columnist

Jan. 12, 1950, Hedda Hopper

Jan. 12, 1950: "Judy Garland has been out of 'Summer Stock' for the past few days due to illness. So, before those rumors get rolling again, here are the facts. I checked with other members of the cast, and they told me that Judy couldn't have been more cooperative during the entire picture. A series of strenuous dance routines has been draining her energies."

  1. Hedda Hopper was in error, if not outright confused. John Wayne did at three pictures during this period, that were from an original story line by James Warner Bellah. The picture Hopper should have referred to was “Rio Grande.” Rio Bravo (as Sheriff John T. Chance), wasn’t released until 1959. Imagine little Ricky Nelson, at 9 years of age running around with a Colt revolver.
    The three pictures?
Fort Apache (1948) (as Capt. Kirby York)
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) (as Capt. Nathan Cutting Brittles)
    and
Rio Grande (1950) (as Lt. Col. Kirby York)
What is really interesting is the chronology and the players.
Although Ben Johnson appears in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon as Sgt. Tyree, in the motion picture, Rio Grande, he is Trooper Tyree.
All three are classic John Wayne pictures and have great cinematography for the period, acting and realistic shooting locations.
